I have an article which requires registration, and a free registration plan. If an unregistered user tries to access this article they see message with a link to the registration page.
When they click this link they see the registration page, but the reCaptcha does not display; they see an error message when they click register button regarding the Remote IP.

How are you displaying reCaptcha? With CB AntiSpam? If not please install and configure CB AntiSpam reCaptcha parameters then enable the Captcha field for registration display. CB AntiSpam captcha is tested working fine with CBSubs.

No; i'm using the standard google joomla plug-in. i downloaded the cbantispam plug-in but see that it needs a CB update; The site is joomla 2.5.27. Will CB 3.3.6 be OK with that? I'm working on a Joomla upgrade but it's a big site and a long job...
CB does not work with Joomla reCaptcha. You need to be using the reCaptcha provided by CB for it to work correctly on CBs registration forms. CB provides reCaptcha through CB AntiSpam. All latest releases (except GJ as rewrite is not yet complete) require CB 2.x. If you're still on CB 1.x I don't know what to suggest, sorry.

No, CB AntiSpam supports reCaptcha, internal captcha, and internal question based captcha.
