Do you have an HTTPS redirect being enforced or is live_site in configuration.php configured? If live_site is configured ensure it's set to '' (blank) so it can be dynamic. It's possible you're trying to submit an HTTP form to an HTTPS URL and is why you're having issues, but that should trigger a browser error and not the unauthorized page.

I force WWW but not SSL. I selected to use SSL in the Joomla menu item which seems to have stopped this on this particular page which is all I need for now. I'll check live_site but I it's usually empty. thanks
If you force www and live_site is specified without it then it becomes a cross-domain post, but that should still just cause a re-display of the login page. Do you have "Encrypt Login Form" enabled within your CB Login module parameters?
