When I tell CB to load 1000 users, I can see that my request takes a long time (which I guess is normal). After some time, Joomla simply jumps back to the main Joomla administration panel.
No idea why as it definitely has not got to do with server-timeout (time-out set to 10 min). Also, this happens when I load any number of users over 500.
Correction... It does load them but when I try to do anything with them, then it brings me back to the joomla panel (problem I mentioned above). Not important to find out the cause since the website is still pretty small at the moment.

What can I say - thinks are working on my test sites.
Please note that there are many server based paramaters that influence resources your actions may need. There is more than one timeout parameter for example.
Check your server error logs for example - it might give you some insight on this.
But yes if you have many users and are doing batch processing, then it is not unreasonable to break up batches into smaller pieces for processing.
