If you're using CBSubs to add usergroups then CBSubs will remove those usergroups when they unsubscribe or expire. The CB user during registration is always given the usergroup specified in User > Manage, which CBSubs maybe restoring if you're removing. Best option for complete control is to just use the above and let CB Auto Actions control usergroup assignment entirely as the above usage can be used with whatever actions you like to implement behavior during the subscription process (e.g. Usergroup action).
