How do I auto place someone in a group based on CB field. Let's say everyone in with cb_country = United States is placed in the USGroup.

You need to use CB Auto Actions for that. The below tutorial covers this exact usage.

We've also some CB Auto Action videos below to help become more familiar with using CB Auto Actions.

Let me ask - does this just work with registrations? I manually create my user accounts. No self registration.

There's a frontend and backend registration trigger. To cover both usages you need to use both onAfterUserRegistration and onAfterNewUser triggers.

So I got this to work using the trigger onAfterUserUpdate - but this trigger only work on the front-end? What about a back-end user update?

Please see Kyle's previous response.

He gave you 2 triggers - one for frontend and one for backend - just use both.
