Yes, there is no batch reprocessing. If you need to alter their sizes then you need to either make CSS that downscales them (and will cause distortion) or reprocess the images entirely (which will require each being reuploaded). The grid usage is not designed for tall images as it was designed for squared images.

Try the above CSS and see if it helps though and if it looks reasonable will see about improving it further and implementing for a later release.

A small utility tool to batch reimport all avatar or canvas images, after parameter options have been updated, would be REALLY useful. I now have hundreds of avatars to reload. Thanks for your support.

There are such standalone tools available, but you will have to download all your images, use the tool and then upload them again (not changing their file names.

I understand it'd be useful, but it'd also cause a mountain of support and headache that I've no desire to deal with. I can promise you it'd crash 99% servers. Reprocessing hundreds/thousands of images using PHP on what's usually budget hosting is not possible. All we'd see is forum posts complaining it doesn't work. Use a standalone program like GIMP batch script or photoshop batching to mass reprocess. So with all that said no matter the usefulness of such a feature it will never be implemented, sorry.

Some downscaling CSS can likely fix your issue, but you've yet to comment back if my proposed CSS solves it and looks acceptable to you.
