we would like to deactivate the background picture for groups and profiles.
it is not possible to unpublish the field "canvas". what else can we try to hide this content?

For profiles you basically can't use the canvas layout positions then. It's designed with the canvas in mind. For Groups no there's no disabling it at all unless you modify the template files. You can find GJs template files below.
Make a copy of the default folder, rename it to something like "mytemplate", then delete any files in it that you do not intend to modify. Now within GJ > Configuration select your template. You can now begin editing your template files without risk of them being lost on upgrade.
