Works perfectly fine here. Substitutions were not touched in CB 2.1.2. That substitution is based off the viewing user as well as no user parameter was supplied meaning you need to be logged in for it to substitute anything.

Ok, but when I substitute [cb:userfield field="username" /] with [cb:userfield field="firstname" /] I get my First Name. Why does the username act differently and does not output my username?

Because your username field is probably not accessible. It needs to be set to display on profile and be on an accessible tab for it to display using that substitution. It'll probably output with [username] which pulls the raw value from their user object.

Glad you got things working.

If this issue is in fact not related to 2.1.2 update then please revise the subject for people searching in the future.
