It's not working because you're trying to access the CBuser object and not the CB data user object. The below will directly give you a CB data user object.

No, the CBuser API caches user objects. This means once that user object is loaded it will not have to query for it again in subsequent calls. Doing a database query directly results in it querying over and over unless you add your own caching. Using CBuser API is more efficient.
