is it possible to modify the white background color on the default cb template (that surrounds the canvas and avatar), tried to find it via inspect element and couldn't.

Yes, you can use our CSS overrides functionality to do this. See the below on how to use CSS overrides with CB templates.

As for the selector for whatever you're wanting to restyle you'll need to right click and inspect the page, which will reveal the CSS in your browsers developer console (typically can press F12 to open directly).
