ok not sure what I did, but now the activity buttons (for posting links, images, locations etc) are missing when I try to post from a Firefox or Safari on a Mac. Tried 2 different machines, same results.
Works perfectly fine in Safari on my iPhone.

That's jQuery based so something either caused a fatal JS error to break the binding or as you said a caching problem. Review the caching settings you've set within Joomla and ensure it's not too aggressive. I do not recommend using Joomlas page caching plugin in dynamic environments.
