Edit your avatar field within CB > Field Management then under Parameters > Image Limits adjust "Maintain Aspect Ratio" as desired. It can handle automatic cropping or allow your users to select how it'll crop.

It will only crop if it needs to. If the image is smaller than the maximum sizes you've supplied there may not be anything to crop. At this time you can't set a minimum size so it's not going to upscale just so they can crop.
