It will be looked into in a future release. Some things just can't work in the field groups because technically the fields in the field groups don't exist and our ajax endpoints don't have any a means of handling that behavior nor does any of the jQuery bindings in CB Core Fields Ajax, CB Conditional, etc..

Ok, I've this partially fixed. Will continue working on a solution, but looks like I should have this fixed for sometime next week to allow the Update On to function within a field group. Query fields themselves already function fine inside a field group fine. It's specifically the Update On not working causing your issue, but it's a pretty tricky issue to fix since CB Core Fields Ajax was not designed with field groups in mind (they did not exist at the time).

Ok, this is now fixed. Please update both CB Core Fields Ajax and CB Field Groups as it requires changes to both. Your existing usage should work as is without needing any further configuration as long as it worked fine before being added to a Field Group.
