Is there a way to show (somewhere at the top of an article) the total number of comments made for that article, so that visitors can see immediately if there are any comments?
Not unless you basically render the comments inline within your article using the CB Activity Bot usage for substituting in a stream. CB Activity always renders the comments at the bottom of an article. More than likely adding the count to the top wouldn't really add any value to the article it self.

I suppose it's not possible either to use CB activity module to only show comments made on specific article?
Correct, the module has no idea it's being displayed on an article. It can only go based off Itemid (page_id) and Module (module_id).
