That ajax check has nothing to do with whether the email address is a valid email address or not. It's checking if the email address responds to MX Record lookups so it knows for sure if the email address can receive emails. This isn't reliable though as lot of email providers don't respond to lookups. You can turn this off within the email fields validation settings.
