Although we have an invite-only members-only site, the client has asked for a version of the members profile that we can make Public. I have accomplished this with a special tab that is Guest only access in Profile view ( Only the photo, canvas, name from the normal profile remains ). But in Profile Edit, privacy controls let the owner change it.
So this is similar to sites like Linked-In where you can decide what goes into your Public profile.
However, I would like to know if there is any way I can show them this "Public View" of their profile without making them logout.
Not at this time there isn't support for that. viewas was only recently added. You can add &viewas=other to the profile URL to view the non-self profile layout, but it currently only affects layout. It won't render the profile as if they're logged out. Have added a feature ticket for a viewas option of public for a future release.
