Seams like a bug in the search component then. We're not applying any shortening behavior like substr, etc.. to the search results. We simply build the results and pass it to Joomla's search component and Joomla's search component shortens if over whatever its length limit is set to. The search component is old and discontinued though so I've no idea if that will ever be fixed, but sounds like you found a workaround.
