Major issue with uploads of photos (error 503)

1 day 18 hours ago - 1 day 17 hours ago #342942 by Toulouzing
Hi!
I ma starting beta-tests on my new site. I had since the beginning some issues while uploading 1 or bunch of photos, somes are not uploaded because of 503 error. It is not depending of photo jpg itself of course. As it was a server error i asked the provider ( N°1 in Europe) to fix the problem and this is the answer ( translated from French).... I feel really not cumfortable with this issue because 50% of uploads are failing  (even if it is only 1 attempts to upload a photo where the rate of failure is close to 80% !  (both from gallery or from stream attachment

You contacted us regarding 503 errors on your website. After reviewing our services, here are the conclusions of our technical analysis:

Source of the error: Error 503 indicates that your instance has reached the resource limits allocated to your subscription. This occurs when RAM, CPU time, or the number of concurrent processes is exceeded.

Server status: We confirm that there are no overall malfunctions on our servers. The host machine resources are fully operational; this is a saturation specific to your website's resource consumption.

Maintenance and analysis: In accordance with our terms of service, we do not directly modify the content or internal configuration of our clients' websites. Similarly, we do not analyze your code or scripts.

What are the next steps for you? It is up to your technical team or your developer to analyze your error logs to identify the cause of this overconsumption (resource-intensive plugin, looping script, traffic spike, etc.) and to apply the necessary fixes.

Each upload is a single request. These requests are made one after another. The memory buffer is cleared after each upload. So the uploads are already as optimized as they possibly can be. Client side resizing substantially reduces the amount of data transferred as well so I recommend ensuring that is not turned off in your galleries.

It seams like your server just simple isn't good enough to handle the bandwidth you need and you likely need to move to a higher tier hosting package or you need to substantially reduce the size limits of what you accept to be uploaded so smaller files are uploaded or images are client side resized to be much smaller.

Thank you, this is what i add in mind but unfortunatly i made a test with reduced photo (JPEG 100K) and it is not uploaded - Very strange but it looks better when I have 3 or more photos - I tried a bunch of 75 photos ( between 100 and 800K) several time to check and i have always the firsts failing in upload ( between 5 an 10) - I will ask again the service provider but i am afraid i will have same answer...

There's nothing I can do about a 503 error. Your server is blocking the request. You either need to upgrade your hosting package for more bandwidth or consider finding a more reliable host.

The only other thing I can suggest is turn off resampling within your galleries. This will cause images that don't need to resize or change format to just straight copy. This isn't generally recommended as it could allow users to upload vulnerabilities embedded in images. Resampling is a very useful security measure, but if only you and trusted individuals plan to upload then it'll be fine. That would help reduce the burden on the server.

OK. Resizing and Resampling was already Off ( i guess you talked about "smoothing") because i need to collect EXIF- The weird thing is the 503 error occurs almost 100% if i try to upload 1 image only !!
I will call host provider tomorrow...

The weird thing is the 503 error occurs almost 100% if i try to upload 1 image only !! Globally, if I upload a bunch of pictures ( wathever the size), the firsts ones are always skipped with a 503 return.

There's nothing I can do about a 503. Your server is rejecting the request. You'll have to take this up with your host. Their explanation was resource limits. That suggests you need a higher tier hosting package with more resources.

Resizing and Resampling was already Off ( i guess you talked about "smoothing") because i need to collect EXIF

No, I was referring specifically to resampling. Server side resampling works fine with EXIF data. It's just client side resizing that doesn't maintain EXIF data.

If it was already off then there isn't anything further I can suggest. This will just cause a direct PHP file move if the image doesn't need to be resized. That's effectively as minimally resource intensive as it gets. Your host however is rejecting the request with a 503 before the file is ever touched by CB Gallery so no amount of settings is going to help here.
