Custom registration form not saving data

I'm using the excellent custom menu layout to show only a few fields at registration and most of them collect the data correctly. A few don't despite being visible and published. Layout is as below:

    </tr>

I can add the data in the backend and it shows. 

Any reason why these are not collecting the registration data?

It works when the fields are part of a field group though. I might just leave them in the group.

Sorry, I don't understand what you're doing exactly. This is a custom layout where? In a field or within your template?

Sorry, it's a custom registration layout in the new menu settings. It's working now but only because I've used the field group instead of the individual fields. Not a huge issue but it is why I'm trying to simplify a complicated workflow.

Ah, you're trying to render and save fields that are a part of a field group. That's not possible since now those fields are used for the purpose of the field group and you'd have to render and save the entire field group field instead as you've discovered.
