uddeim upgrade - failed to write to config

After upgrading from Uddeim 1.6 to 1.9 I'm getting the infamous "Critical Error: Failed to write to configuration file" issue.

I changed permissions for config.class.php and the folder /administrator/components/com_uddeim but I'm still getting the error. I must be overlooking something simple. Thanks.

This turned out to be a problem with the FTP details in Joomla's global config. I disabled FTP and the uddeim config became writable.
