Did you ever find out how to do what you wanted to in your original post by any chance?
I only ask as I need to do the same and whilst I've selected Jomsocial as the choice of PMS provider within Component>UddeIM section, it doesn't seem to have changed anything within a persons profile messaging wise.
As you will see in this screenshot, bottom right
this is where I'm starting with trying to get it to use UddeIM rather than any other.
I look forward to hearing from you in due course and possibly a Moderator here maybe able to help me too.
