I understand. We just wanted to use the field as a subdomain field for our users, which means that empty field would not be an option.
But I guess that if the field is compulsory, then the user will have to input a value, even with the placeholder displayed.
In this case the placeholder would just be a suggestion for an input and we have the behavior that we request.
Am I right ?
The placeholder can be whatever you want. Usually it's some sort of hint as to what you're wanting them to supply. If you want alias compulsory then mark the field required, but they will not be allowed to set it to their username. This is intended as it covers the usecase of forcing them to have a URL that does not include their username. There's no way to have it required and allow them to supply their current username as alias (defeats the point of it being required).

Ok we'll move to the alias being required and different from username.
That will allow us to avoid subdomains if the user does not want them, simply by not inputting an alias.
