Did some more digging and things just seamed.. wonky. The substitutions were not getting the appropriate user object. Looks like we've an old long standing bug in core CB with the wrong user object being sent through our API. I'm currently investigating this further to see what's going on.

Ok, it was indeed a bug in core CB. Have prepared a fix. This should allow the field group substitutions to be a lot more reliable once a new CB build with the fix is released.
