forge.joomlapolis.com/projects/lan-cb-en/files (the CB 1.8 one is fine as there are no language changes).

That's what I've been doing. I've got the German and the English language files, as my site is bilingual. I simply didn't realise that the folder contained a second language file for plugins.

I was wondering about CB upgrades, though. If I understand you correctly, my changes to the language files will carry over through upgrades. Is that right?

Yes, as long as you don't edit the default language file. Editing the English plugin files is perfectly safe and you won't lose changes when you upgrade CB.

Great, that's good to know!

One more question: Where do I find / edit the language strings that give the previous / next / register output to the step-by-step registration in CB Conditional? I've managed to rename the steps but haven't worked out how to rename the buttons.

They don't exist in the files by default so you'll need to add them to your cbteamplugins language file of your language plugins.

'Next' => 'Next',
'Previous' => 'Previous',
'Register' => 'Register',
