I have the same problem after an update to 2.2.1 Fields are "Display on profile". Tab is published and public. Privacy is "Show on profile".

You've something controlling visibility. This is purely the issue. If the formatname field can't be seen then chances are you won't see the name display in any of my plugins as I used API to retrieve this information.

However i was not able to figure out the language strings.

Edit the template files and you'll see a good bit of the language strings. All "title" usages in plugin.cbactivity.php are also language strings that you can define.

I have the same problem, but.. the activity module only shows unknowns in a position-3 on the user list page. The activity module is also in position-3 on the user profile page, where it do shows the user names..User names is a public field on a public tab.

If it shows unknown then it's an accessibility issue or the user no longer exists. You need to ensure the field is on a public and published tab. Next you need to ensure the field is configured to display on profile. Don't condition it with CB Conditional and don't privacy control it with CB Privacy. If you don't want it visible on profile then move its tab to a not shown on profile position.

I understand what you're saying and as far as I can tell these conditions are met.

The unknowns are shown for all usernames. The funny thing is the CB activity module works ok on one page (Shows all usernames) but does not work on another Joomla page (shows unknowens instead of usernames). So the issue must be in the type of page?

I've no idea. There's no reason for it to do that. It simply uses the getFields API like anywhere else (GJ for example uses this same API for name displays). Perhaps you've something installed causing the names fields to be removed? Disable non-core CB plugins 1 by 1 and see if it resolves.
