Upwards migration question

But, if I don't want my current site to be joomla 2.5 ... there are too many things wrong with it ...

Would I be best to:

a) back the site up with akeeba
b) create a special directory/site for updating and use the akeeba backup
c) install the latest version of CB
d) run jupgrade
e) export the tables I need and reimport them in my new site database

Oh, and the joomla versions and community builder versions are 1.7x

I don't suggest using J1.7. You should use J2.5 or J3.0, both are stable releases although J2.5 is probably most stable for now. You should fist upgrade CB to 1.9, then create your backup, then run jUpgrade.

The live site is already 1.7 ... I'm creating a brand new site with 2.5.

Then there is no migration. Just copy your database tables over. You should even be able to upgrade from Joomla backend to J2.5 then uninstall anything you don't want.
