On profile front end editing the avatar field has a drop down with 2 options where the user can choose to either delete the image or upload a new one. But where is the option to just keep the image that is already uploaded?

If the user has an actual image uploaded then there should be an option to keep it, which would be the default value. If there isn't an image stored in database then it forces them to upload one if the field is set as Required. Check _comprofiler database table and ensure the user has actually uploaded an image.

"ensure the user has actually uploaded an image"
... as you can see in the screenshot that user (me) has an avatar (for 2 years now), so that cannot be the caus of the missing option

Well there's no reason for it to suddenly stop working. What was recently done? New plugin installed? Field modified? Try to reverse anything previously done to see if that resolves your issue.

Thanks for the hint but that is not helping in any way. The avatar field is a standard field. What could I have changed there??? How could I possibly have altered the options of that field??? There is simply missing the option to keep the avatar image - just put it back in please - that is all I need.

Disable 3rd party CB plugins 1 by 1 and see if issue resolves. If something is altering the CB user object then the field will see there is no value and if the field is set to Required then you get the behavior you're seeing. If still not resolved repeat with 3rd party Joomla system and user plugins.

We didn't remove the option. Please see the below screenshot where it's working perfectly fine.

Are you using CB 1.9.1 or CB 2.0 Beta 5?
