If the user isn't creating there would be anything to look at in the database. It's more likely something is stopping either the Joomla user store or CB user store, which is typically due to a CB plugin or Joomla System/User plugin.

I am using default template and have error reporting on and debugging on and have published menu item public on page with cb login module on it. Have ensured that live_site in configuration.php is an empty string
still no errors outputting.
If I disable cb and enable default joomla login module it works and creates a user and then emails them for confirmation and forgot user id/ password works and emails. odd problem is that random users have also been sent email that goes to administrators from joomla that new user has registered. It went to admin but also random registered users.

the big mistake I made was that I seem to have no problems on test site so I updated the "live" site. I messed up and did not notice that the new user registration and forgot password was not working on test site. I can add users via the backend ok. I do have backup and will restore that and go through steps again to see if problem is with upgrade from 3.36 to 3.41 or if it is something with cb 2.0 upgrade from 1.91. This time I will do joomla upgrade first then cb upgrade and I was using groupjive, cbsubs and cb with 1.91. I did uninstall groupjive before upgrading to 2.0

If Joomla login and registration is working then your issue is likely due to a CB Plugin interrupting the registration or login. Disable non-core CB plugins, all of them, and see if the issue goes away. If not then I don't know what more to suggest and you'd need to PM backend super administrator login credentials so I can take a look.

I have stepped back through turning off extensions. joomla login form works and new user is created and passwords can be reset. I turned off all non -core cb plugins. The problem still occurs when I am using cb login module and new user cannot register, and forgot login does not work as in it. existing users can log in ok and edit their profiles and etc. They can even donate using donation plan from their profile. I have sent pm with credentials

Have reviewed your install and I've no idea what's causing the conflict. Something is interrupting the registration, but there is no error output at all so I've no idea what is doing it. Do you have a custom .htaccess file for SEF in Joomla root? If so delete it and disable SEF entirely then see if issue persists as it's possible a custom rewrite rule could be breaking this.
