Don't use custom rewrite rules. Just use the htaccess file included with Joomla and properly renamed. Then enable SEF with URL rewriting in Joomla global configuration. Next ensure the Joomla SEF system plugin is published and public. SEF should then work perfectly fine.

Ok, so I copied a brand new htaccess file from a fresh Joomla download onto my website as you suggested, it crashed it and created a 500 Error.

So I replaced it back to the old file, then deleted the extra re-write rules as you suggested.

Turned on SEF, and the SEF worked, but when I click a users "Send Email" link to form, I get the Red Login Error message again like before. So apparently that doesn't work either. I didn't check the log-in issue but I assume that still exists.

So, next I enabled the URL re-write. Crashed the site again with a 404 Not Found error.

Something must be wrong here if we cant get it to work with all of this.

You should have no issues with the default htaccess file included with Joomla. If you're using PHP version switches then be sure to add those to the htaccess file. I've no idea why SEF isn't working properly on your site. Seams like something wrong with mod_rewrite maybe not being enabled (check System > System Information > PHP Information).

Turned on SEF, and the SEF worked, but when I click a users "Send Email" link to form, I get the Red Login Error message again like before. So apparently that doesn't work either. I didn't check the log-in issue but I assume that still exists.

You're supposed to get a login error if using Send Email while not logged in. You need to enable public usage of it within CB > Configuration > General.

Im at a whits end. I have looked through everything and it seems to all be right.

Yes, I have public on so email works without SEF enabled. When it is enabled, it gives the error message even though Public is on.

Does SEF without rewriting work fine? You mentioned above it only crashes with rewriting enabled, which could be a problem with mod_rewrite.
